Super Balm to the rescue of (almost) everything has been a hit recipe since its introduction over 5 years ago by LMH. I have made numerous batches of this reliable formula.

Protective & restorative, it’s ideal for shielding cheeks during winter, has saved more than a few cases of eczema and psoriasis, and has contributed to the healing of many small wounds. Thanks to KIIMA, we can now offer it in the ultra-practical stick format!

Ingredients

Marshmallow & Calendula Infused Oil

  • ¼ cup (3 g) dried calendula

  • ¼ cup (10 g) dried marshmallow root

  • 200 ml (160 g) sunflower oil

Super Balm

  • 1 tbsp (7 g) beeswax (small pieces)

  • 1 tbsp (12 g) raw shea butter

  • 1 tbsp (12 g) marshmallow & calendula infused oil

  • 50 drops (1.2 g) 10% Italian Helichrysum (Immortelle) essential oil (Helichrysum italicum) (optional - see "How does it work" note below)

  • ½ dropper (0.5 g) vitamin E (optional)

  • Cheesecloth

  • KIIMA DIY silicone mold

  • KIIMA refillable deodorant applicator

Instructions

MARSHMALLOW & CALENDULA INFUSED OIL

  1. In a heat-resistant jar (such as a Mason jar or Pyrex cup), add the calendula flowers and marshmallow root. Pour the oil over the herbs and use a clean, dry spoon to mix thoroughly, ensuring the oil completely covers the plants with at least one inch of excess.

  2. Place the jar in a small saucepan, adding water until just above the oil level. Important: Avoid getting any water into the oil-herb mixture.

  3. Heat on low for 2 hours, placing kitchen towels or cloths around the jar to keep it stable and minimize direct heat exposure. Monitor the water temperature—it should not reach a rolling boil. You may need to add water as it evaporates.

  4. Remove from heat, allow to cool, then strain with cheesecloth or a clean nylon stocking to extract the infused oil.

ALTERNATIVE METHOD – COLD INFUSION

Alternatively, you can make the infused oil without heat by placing the herbs in oil within a sealed container at room temperature for 3–4 weeks. The plants must be fully submerged, with at least ½ inch of excess oil. You may need to top up the oil as the herbs absorb it.

Unexpected Tip! You can use this infused oil directly as body oil or incorporate it into any DIY product requiring oil—lip balm, body butter, facial serum, etc.

SUPER BALM

  1. Using a double boiler, melt the beeswax, shea butter, and infused oil together.

  2. Once melted, remove from heat and add the essential oil and vitamin E, if using.

  3. Mix well, then quickly pour into the silicone mold.

  4. Allow to set at room temperature for a few hours.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Beeswax and shea butter create a protective barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and shielding it from environmental damage. Marshmallow and calendula, known for their soothing & restorative properties, have been used for centuries to calm and repair the skin.

For enhanced healing, adding Italian Helichrysum (Immortelle) essential oil is highly recommended. Scar-healing & anti-inflammatory, it helps repair tissue after falls, bruises, scrapes, and minor wounds.

Definitely a must-have in your skincare arsenal!
