Meet the Goddesses

By Andrée Noye

Reading time: 3-4 minutes Even though West Pubnico has become more civilized, it is still surrounded by rural lands, and despite the extensive renovations, C+M’s humble abode remains an old garage. Since we will have a significant number of herbs and natural products that may attract voles, I thought it would be beneficial to rotate my cats from home to the office.

Let me introduce you to the quartet of Goddesses:

Alt Text: Bastet the curious Savannah-Bengal mix reaches for the camera amidst a jungle of house plants.

Bastet: Our eldest, a 3-year-old Savannah x Bengal mix, was rescued after being declawed and attacked by dogs in her previous home as a tiny kitten. She is athletic, vocal, fierce, loyal, and a tad judgmental. Named after the Egyptian goddess of protection, pleasure, and good health, Bastet is our Mouser-in-Chief, known for her dexterity and accuracy.

Alt Text: Sekhmet, our Siamese kitten, and Bastet, the feline and mythological duo, observe with regal poise the dogs antics from their cozy tree house perch.

Sekhmet: Bastet’s sister, a 2-year-old Siamese and the runt of her litter, barely weighs 5 lbs but has a giant presence. Rescued from a cat factory, Sekhmet is named after the Egyptian goddess who was Bastet’s sister… coincidentally she was also the patron of healers and physicians. She is incredibly cuddly and always by my side, even when I’m working.

Lemmykin: This cheeky and sadly neglected barn cat adopted us. Named after the god of Rock & Roll himself Lemmy Kilmister (one of Motorhead's song was playing in the background when we drove her home), our polydactyl calico overcame a severe infection that nearly cost her an eye and part of her nose. Lemmy is a purr machine with 24 toes and a big heart. Her rough start has made her the ruthless huntress of the group.

Nedjem: The youngest, Nedjem, whose name means "sweetie," was found as a tiny, skinny kitten in the tall grass. Now five months old, she is a whirlwind of energy, imitating her big sisters with great theatrics. Fun fact: Nedjem is also the first cat's name ever recorded in history. The name means sweet or pleasant and dates from the reign of Thutmose III (1479-1425 BC).

Why Cats Will Be Awesome at the Clinic

All our cats enjoy interacting with people, adding a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to the center. The quartet of goddesses helps stabilize morale, reducing highs and lows, and promoting a more consistent, positive atmosphere. They also reduce stress levels, keeping me happier and more motivated, even during intense work periods.

Let’s be honest—a friendly front desk kitty can attract customers and clients to your business. Many managers and business owners find that customers visit specifically to interact with the pet, sometimes remembering the animal's name more than the employees (cough, Michonne at The Lumberjack's Daughter, cough)

Challenges to Consider

While pets can be messy, I will take steps to keep the center clean and fresh. My cats are well-trained, and I will ensure the treatment room is always off-limits. On production days, no cats will be present as good manufacturing practices dictate a sanitized environment.

Although not everyone likes animals, with almost 80% of Canadian households owning a pet, I am confident that the kitties will make a favorable impression.

The presence of our office kitties at the clinic will not only help with pest control but also create a warm and welcoming environment for our clients. Their presence will boost morale, reduce stress, and provide a unique charm that sets our clinic apart. We look forward to sharing the joy and companionship of our beloved cats with everyone who visits.
